PHOTOS OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM AND THE UNIVERSE FROM MY BACKYARD
Equuleus & Eridani
The beautiful triple system Omicron Eridani, at 16.2 LY distant, is the 49th closest star system to our Sun. The B component was the first white Dwarf star to be discovered and the most easily visible from Earth. The C component is a Red Dwarf star with a mass 1/5 that of our Sun. This system has been featured in many science fiction novels as a home to extraterrestrial life. Most notably the B star is the home star of Star Treks’ Mr. Spock and more recently the A component is the home star of “Rocky”, the Eridanian alien featured in Andy Weir’s novel and recently released movie “Project Hail Mary”.

51 Eridani is just visible to the naked eye at magnitude 5.2. The physically bound C component is itself a close binary system made up of two Red Dwarf stars separated by only 0.14 AU.

Gamma Eridani is relatively close at 203 LY. The A-B components are Physically related. * * *
