Double-Doubles

Double Stars are so numerous that it is not at all unusual to find two or more cataloged pairs in close proximity to one another when viewing through a telescope or binoculars. In many cases the pairs are not well matched in terms of Magnitudes, Separations or Position Angle, but when there is some commonality of properties between the pairs it can be a visual treat.

The most celebrated Double-Double is Epsion Lyrae where each of the individual pairs is a physical system with similar magnitudes and separations as well as the two binary systems sharing a true gravitational bond with each other.

J1953 & J1954 make up what I like to call “The Double-Triple”. The mirror image symmetry centered about the optical pair FYM 596 is striking. The “C” components for both systems are not physically bound though the A-B components for each system are.

Commonly Referred to as “The Other Double-Double in Lyra” it is notable that the Magnitudes and the Positon Angles of the two pairs are very similar. Only the stars of STF 2474 are a true physical system
